StepfamilySystems.com is a unique brand of stepfamily and shared parenting support. One emphasis focuses on the creation of positive, shared family memories because they can serve as stablizing forces in turbulent stepfamily or shared-parenting seas. Use of the arts to facilitate healing is not new. Its indirectness of communication can help defenses lay low, and according to the work produced by Hanna Yaxa Kwiatkowska (1967*) it is believed, "The symbolic images express unconscious feelings and gradually help to uncover and clarify ambivalent and confused attitudes within the family, feelings which are often too intense to express in words. Thus, in some instances, the therapeutic process can be accelerated by the family art therapy program." Aren't we looking for quick results that are as painless as possible? Many adults and children in stepfamily and shared parenting settings stuff down feelings of bitterness, helplessness, guilt, frustration and anger. Goals for this program:

    • to off-set the costs of services and support material for parents who must co-conduct raising their children with another household
    • to be a resource to k - 12 schools to bring in stepfamily organizations, speakers and information for parents
    • to establish local community-school partnerships for stepfamily education to increase family stability
    • to create awareness of the arts and family art therapy as a means of healing wounded relationships
    • to reduce the risks of academic neglect which frequently occurs when families are in transition

Artist RD Atkins has found people of all ages let down their guard when an empty canvas is placed before them with supplies - sometimes as simple as a package of Gelly Roll Pens. Above is Gelly Roll Pens artwork! She thought she would see how they might work for "no spill" art expressions so that parents would not have to dread clean up requirements. The artwork showcased above provided a result better than expected and they are her go-to brand. You will find a link to the manufacturer of Gelly Roll pens, Sakura of America, on her website www.wyoming-outpost.com. Crayons and coloring books might not allow for as much creative expression for discovery purposes, yet it is excellent shared-memory time for parents and children.

StepfamilySystems.com is proud of its philanthropic foundation.  October 20, 2009, Powe completed a certification in Philanthropy and Development under the instruction of Dr. Jim Erickson at The Center for Philanthropy La Sierra University's School of Business. Philanthropy comes from the Greek term meaning love for mankind. In a book addressing how schools can cope with the crisis in childrearing, which is reflected in student civility, attitudes, behaviors and academic achievement, Evans (2004) conveyed children are increasingly arriving at school less ready to learn upon entering their learning environments – not less intelligent, but less ready to be students. Powe looks forward to helping teachers, students and their families through partnership with school sites, YWCA and other community facilities to offer StepfamilySystems' family art programs.

2010 has been the year predicted for stepfamilies to become the #1 family type in the United States. StepfamilySystems.com has the vision to activate art-based therapy and programs between school and community partnerships.
.
Through community partnerships to facilitate these art-based scholarships and programs for families and teachers, it is our belief children who are distracted learners can become better focused students at home, in transition between homes and when they enter the classroom. Art therapy theory was formulated by Margaret Naumburg (1966). Clinical art therapy is effective for gaining awareness, reality-testing, problem-solving, revealing unconscious material, catharsis, working through conflicts, integration and/or individuation. It can help them better understand themselves and how they function as individuals and/or part of a family or group system in a non-threatening environment while creating shared family memories, a cornerstone of the ACES: Family Focal Points program since 1990*.
